Minehead Middle School will reopen on Monday for the first time since a devastating school bus crash that claimed the life of a 10-year-old pupil and left nine others in hospital. The Somerset school had closed on Friday following the tragic incident involving a school bus carrying 60 to 70 pupils and staff.
The crash occurred on Thursday afternoon as the group returned from a trip to Exmoor Zoo. The vehicle left the A396 at Cutcombe Hill near Minehead, overturned and came to rest about 20 feet from the road down a steep slope.
Six children still hospitalised
Emergency services responded to the scene between Wheddon Cross and Timberscombe at approximately 3.15pm on Thursday. Six children and three adults remain in hospital following the accident, which has shocked the local community.
The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of support from across the region. Tens of thousands of pounds have been raised for the victims and their families in the aftermath of the incident.
Community rallies around school
Members of the local community have left tributes at the school gates as the town comes to terms with the loss. The gesture reflects the tight-knit nature of the Somerset community and their determination to support those affected.
A spokeswoman for Beacon Education Multi-Academy Trust, which runs Minehead Middle School, confirmed that classes would resume on Monday. The trust announced the reopening as the school prepares to welcome back pupils and staff following the devastating crash.
